L'élevage de précision, quels changements dans la relation homme-animal et la représentation de leur métier par les éleveurs ?

Abstract : A survey was carried out on 25 farms in France to better understand how new technologies impact human-animal relationships on the farm and farmers’ views of their profession. The farms produced three species with different equipment: a milking robot andorheat detector for dairy cows, an automatic feeder for sows, and a housing management system and or automated weighing system for poultry. Three profiles emerged from the analysis of the semi-directed interviews with farmers.Farmers with the profile A consider that one cannot talk about the human-animal relationship on their farm, and do not enjoy either touching or talking to their animals. In profile B,the farmersassociate a good human-animal relationship with animals’ welfare. Profile C is characterized by the central place occupied by animals. They associate a good human-animal relationship with the animals’ absence of fear.Farmers motivated by animals(profile C)find in precision livestock farmingbenefits related to animals, while the others (profile A and B)find technical benefits detached from the animals. The farmers have room to manoeuvre in how they use the equipment; this can be seen in the degree to which tasks are delegated to the equipment, which can be partial or total; or in the practices they implement to keep close to animals or not; or in the morning routine, by first looking at the animals or atthe computer.Nevertheless, some farmers noted limits to the place of new technologies on a farm, saying that they can supplement farmers’ observations but not replace them.In this article, wedescribe the three profilesand focus on specific outcomes for dairy producer
