Estimation of flow through porous and perforated plates with CFX and scale model validations

Abstract : Airflow patterns through a livestock building with a diffusing ceiling ventilation system were modelled using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code CFX. Two kinds of ceilings were tested in a 1/10 scale model : a porous diffusing ceiling and a perforated plate. Several simulations were carried out for each kind of ceiling in the scale model geometry and predicted air velocities were compared with experimental data. Good predictions were obtained with a porous plate as diffusing ceiling. For the perforated plate ceiling, rather good predictions were obtained by individually simulating each hole of the plate. This perforated plate was also modelled by a virutual porous medium. We got poor consistency until we used the correction proposed by Wen, 1994. With that correction we obtained a dramatic improvement which opens an opportunity to get a good prediction of the flow in realistic conditions.
