Estimation du nombre d'anguilles d'Amérique (Anguilla rostrata) quittant le bassin versant du Saint-Laurent et de son taux d'exploitation

Abstract : The St. Lawrence River is one of the largest watersheds colonized by the American eel (Anguilla rostrata). Upstream from Québec City, eels are present in the St. Lawrence main stem and tributaries, including the Lake Ontario watershed. Recently, much concern has been raised concerning declining recruitment of young eels in Lake Ontario and declining catch of silver eels in the St. Lawrence estuary fishery, but no previous study attempted to estimate current silver eel production. In 1996 and 1997, silver eels migrating from the freshwater St. Lawrence watershed were estimated by a mark-recapture technique (hot-branding). In 1996 and 1997 respectively, 1,047 and 1,433 eels were marked and 28,714 and 51,558 were controlled. Estimations conducted with pooled data (Petersen estimate) and with stratified data (Schaefer and Darrock-Plante estimates) evaluate the migrating population at approximately 400,000 fish annually. This study marks the first silver eel estimation for a large watershed, and as such, it makes it possible to estimate the exploitation rate by the commercial fishery, in a range of 20 to 25%, along the migration route. The contribution of this population to the North American spawning stock must be very important considering that 99% of the St. Lawrence silver eels are female and their mean weight is from 1.2 to 1.4 kg.
