Echantillonnage des communautés de Coléoptères Carabiques en milieu forestier. Relations espèces ­ milieu et variations d'efficacité du piège à fosse

Abstract : Pitfall trap (Barber trap) is a common method for sampling epigeal arthropods. It's an interceptive trap, which depends on animal density and activity. Its efficiency varies under the influence of trap parameters, of local environment and of biological features of species. We use pitfall traps to estimate the abundance of ground beetles in forest and to assess the impact of silvicultural practices on ground beetles diversity. Three sampling campaigns occured in 2000 during the spring. Total abundance, species abundance and richness, Simpson diversity and carabid assemblage composition were analysed. About 16 000 carabids and 40 species were identified. Autocarabus auratus is dominant in all forest stands and the ten more abundant species stand for 97% of total carabid numbers. The differences between stands or preservatives are discussed. The inter-trap distance and the interaction between trap system and stand type have no significant effects on abundances and assemblage richness and composition. We therefore assume that trap independence is almost constant in all the forest stages studied and for all the preservatives used. The difference between the two preservatives doesn't vary from young stands to mature forest. The use of our current sampling method for between-stand comparisons of carabid assemblages is thus ratified. A further experiment comparing noxious ethylen-glycol and less-toxic propylen-glycol is in progress.
