La restauration de l'esturgeon européen (Acipenser sturio) et les extractions de granulats dans la Gironde

Abstract : The Gironde estuary in the south-west of France is the last estuary where all diadromous fish from western europe still migrate. In addition, the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne basin is the last know system where the reproduction of the european sturgeon take place. The european sturgeon is an endangered species which is listed under the Threatened species Red Book of France and other international conventions for the conservation of the nature. It is also fully protected in France since 1982 by a government measure. The european sturgeon has been threatened in the last fifty years mostly by gravel extraction on spawning ground and unadapted fishing regulations that lead to overfishing. The Gironde estuary is an essential habitat for the completion of the life history of this anadromous species. A european recovery plan launch in 1994 has shown the significance of the estuary for feeding and acclimatization of juvenile before their first journey at sea. Since the end of the XIX th century, several works connected to navigation (dyke, rockfill, groyne) have been done in the Gironde estuary. This estuary, although few industrialized, suffer the dredging of the navigation channel since its creation in 1875. Although gravel extraction is commonly recognized for causing serious damage on fish habitat, some gravel extraction project in the Gironde estuary are topical. A qualitative analysis of the risk factor, based on the up to date knowledge on biology and ecology of the european sturgeon, shows that these projects lead to maximum risk for the survival of this species. Taking into account the present fragility of the sturgeon population, protective measures as a precaution has to be taken and are in contradiction with gravel extraction.
