Impact des trouées de chablis sur la diversité des communautés de Coléoptères Carabidae

Abstract : Windfall disturbance acts as a driving force in the sylvigenesis as well as a source of regional diversity in temperate forests. Perforation of canopy induces many local ecological changes, in terms of microclimate and ground microhabitats, and creates many patchy open areas in the forest mosaic at the landscape level. In managed French oak forests storm-damaged in 1999, we sampled carabid beetles by pitfall and window-flight traps in 2001. We compared ground beetles assemblages in unlogged natural openings vs closed forests. We studied short-term gap effects, especially gap size and isolation effects, on abundance, richness and composition of beetles communities. Abundance patterns of ecological groups based on life history traits (habitat preference, dispersal abilities.) were also analysed. The average catch of Carabidae was higher on forest controls than in gaps, whereas the cumulative species richness for an equalized sampling effort was greater in gaps. The assemblage composition, studied by Non-metric MultiDimensional Scaling and ANOSIM tests, clearly differed between sites ; small gaps (< 0.3 ha) were close to forest controls, and mid-size (0.3-1 ha) and large (> 1ha) gaps isolated. Indicator species (detected by the IndVal method) were characteristic of forest or open areas. Among forest species, some specialists were significantly affected by the canopy opening, but others did not respond. We did not find any significant effect of landscape composition around gaps on carabid assemblages. Our landscape-dependent hypotheses about the colonization of gaps by open-land species are thus not corroborated.
