Nitrogen removal by activated sludge under variable load and low temperature

Résumé

In winter resorts, wastewater treatment plants faces dramatic influent load increase for a few weeks, combined with cold temperatures. The objective of this research is to analyze the effect of high influent load variations on the nitrogen removal capacity of an activated sludge treatment plant operating at low temperature. It aims at determining the maximal magnitude of load variation acceptable. Two operation strategies are investigated in details by simulations: (i) a fixed aeration tank volume with a fixed MLTSS concentration versus (ii) a variable aeration volume tank with a variable MLTSS concentration. It is demonstrated that the variable aeration tank volume strategy appears more efficient than the fixed volume strategy to cope with long-term peak loads of high magnitude. The fixed aeration tank volume strategy leads to an effluent ammonia+nitrate concentration below 10 mgN/L, if the F/M ratio applied does not exceed 0.10 kgBOD5.(kgMLVSS.d)-1 and the oxygen is present 11 hr a day. In this case, an increase input load factor of 1.4 is eligible. With a variable aeration tank volume, the effluent ammonia+nitrate concentration remains below 10 mgN/L up to a load increase by a factor of 4. If it increases by a factor of 6, the aeration duration needs to be increased by 50%.
