Several published reviews allow identifying more than 140 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP) from various prescription classes measured in many countries. A number of authors compiled ranges of values on the concentrations and removals of selected PPCP in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). But often conclusions from the literature remain contradictory. The aim of our work was to conceive a database in order to study the occurrence and the removal efficiency of PPCP in WWTP with a special interest on the influence of the operating conditions and the type of process. From more than 100 papers, we compiled about 6000 data. The first outputs of our database include the frequency of detection, the mean, median and CV for removal efficiency and concentrations of liquid influent, effluent and sludge. We obtained a list of the most persistent molecules. Using statistical tests we identified the main factors influencing removal efficiency. In order to improve the reliability of data and to allow their use for risk evaluation and for the study of the efficiency of WWTP, we propose a list of information to give on sampling strategy, analytical protocol and WWTP characteristics.
