Applying river restoration knowledge in flood mitigation schemes: RIVERSCAPES as supports for dialog between dry dam designers and biologists

Mettre en oeuvre les connaissances en restauration des rivières sans les projets de gestion des inondations : les Riverscapes comme supports de dialogue entre spécialistes

Résumé

River restoration is a fed by the increasing knowledge on the relationships between geomorphological contexts, habitats, biodiversity, and river systems functions. The same knowledge could really improve the design to minimize the impact of flood mitigation projects on the environment, and yet are not conceived for biodiversity preservation. Later, biologists can suggest changes and only after the computations. We state flood mitigation project designs should be multidisciplinary from early stages to achieve a good compromise between flood protection and biodiversity preservation. This approach needs to share common conceptual views between the different specialists, supported by the consideration of riverscapes and their associated biodiversity. Biologists describe the potential biodiversity, including a rough view of processes, of a set of relevant riverscape types, including trained reaches, and classify them. Comparing the shift of types caused by different technical solutions will then guide the choices. We defined a riverscape typology on Polish mountain rivers and dry dams. We checked that referring to the typology facilitates negotiations to adapt bed armouring to what is necessary for dry dams and river training, and to discuss further adaptations in cross-sections. The conclusions drawn in one context are not necessarily valid elsewhere. The present riverscape typology just formulates the results of a careful local analysis to be easily used a support for concrete and quick actions, and also act as a basis for more detailed multidisciplinary research.
