Utilisation de bandelettes pour la mesure des rejets azotés et l'estimation du fonctionnement de certains dispositifs d'ANC

Abstract : The aim of this study is to elaborate a light protocol of On Site Wastewater Treatment System (OSWTS) follow-up that supplies with a first indicator of their performances. This study mainly focuses on aerobic attached growth processes. The oxygenation of the media allows the reduction of the ions ammonium in nitrates. Therefore, the quantification of the nitrogenous discharge is a good indicator of the efficiency of the treatment system. Is the couple of "ammonium" and "nitrate” test strips a reliable tool to quantify these nitrogenous discharges? To verify it, strips were tested in laboratory for calibration and comparison with standardized chemical methods (reference value) with solution having concentrations varying over a large range. The results were very satisfactory for the couple of test strips. Measures were also done on samples coming from three OSWTS. Analyses were carried out on punctual samples. The representativeness of the punctual samples with regard to a balance over 24 hours in time sample was verified. The error of concentration obtained from a punctual sample with regard to a balance over 24 hours in time sample is of 21 % for the ions ammonium and of 26 % concerning the measure of nitrates. These errors connected to the sampling are significant and have to be taken into account in the calculation of error accumulated by the reading of the test strips. The in situ measures gave satisfactory results for "ammonium" test strip and the accumulated error connected to the methodology is 48 %. On the other hand, there are interferences between nitrites and nitrates ions. The accumulated error concerning the measure of nitrates is to 60 % when the proportion of nitrites with regard to nitrates is low. The analysis of the nitrates need to be adapted if the tint of the indicator zone of nitrites is colored. To neutralize nitrites, some amidosulfonique acid must be added. Finally, relations were established between the BOD5 and the nitrogenous discharges. Despite a correlation between nitrogenous forms and organic matter residual was found, test strips are not precise enough to define the parameter DBO5 in the discharge. On the other hand, an abacus, bounding four sectors of functioning of OSWTS was built. Test strips can be used as an indicator of the “health” of aerobic biological attached growth filters.
