Soil respiration and microbial biomass constrained by warmer winter climate and reduced snow cover in transplanted subalpine pasture turfs
Ambient snow cover promotes carbon mineralisation due to its insulating effect, essentially decoupling the soil from air temperature variation. As a consequence, microbial biomass C and N accumulate, and a depletion of labile litter material is observed.
