French Expertise Report for the VLRs GIG (2015-12-15):River typology, reference situation and ecological status classification: French method based on phytobenthos (diatom communities)

Abstract : As part of a ONEMA-Irstea work-action whose implementation should range between mid-2015 and 2017, France is conducting a study to develop a national Ecological Assessment System for the Very Large Rivers (VLRs). These rivers are more difficult to assess than others, taking into account the fact that reference situation for such large hydrosystems no longer exists in our country. Fortunately, the development of a new national evaluation system could correspond with the start of a European intercalibration exercise whose purpose is to verify the similar level of evaluations between EU Member States, on the basis of a common intercalibration standard. As part of this exercise, in addition to abiotic datasets and to diatom samplings collected on assessed national sites, various kinds of information are requested by the E.U., in order to characterize the national assessment system and its performance in terms of human pressure diagnosis. The present technical note firstly describes how has been developed and how works the national diatomic index (IBD 2007). It also develops how the hydro-ecoregional natural frame (HER) has been taken into account to build evaluation grids adapted to the types of very large rivers met on our national territory.
