Le mélange d'essences peut-il être utilisé comme indicateur de biodiversité ? Cas des cortèges de bryophytes en peuplements purs et mélangés de chêne et de pin

Abstract : The effects of mixed stands are increasingly being studied because of their potential benefits over pure monoculture stands in reconciling ecological and productivity goals. Tree-dependant species like epiphytes may in particular have richer communities in mixed stands, which offer a greater variety of substrates. Our study on bryophyte diversity was conducted in the National Forest of Orléans (France) within pure and mixed oak and pine stands. It showed that (i) bryo-diversity at tree scale was higher on oak than on pine ; (ii) tree species mixture enhanced bryo-diversity on pine ; (iii) mixed stand had less abundant communities of ground-dwelling bryophytes ; (iv) at stand scale, bryo-diversity was poorer in pure pine stands whereas pure oak and mixed stands had similar levels of richness. In terms of composition, we found no species occurring only in mixed stands. Species dwelling on Pine and oak are partially different. In a perspective of transferring the results in simulation models, we ran parametric statistical models and analyzed not only the statistical significance, but also the magnitude of the effects. Exploratory models suggest an effect of basal area on epiphytic species richness in addition to the stand composition effect.
