Abstract : As part of the obligation to implement the WFD in the French overseas departments, a research and development program, aiming at setting-up a diatom index for the ecological status assessment of the streams of the French West Indies, was initiated And financed by the Water Offices and the DEALs of Martinique and Guadeloupe, with financial support from ONEMA. This program was carried out by the Asconit-Irstea consortium, which also self-financed part of it from 2009 to 2011. In order to solve some improvement points identified on the basis of the first version of IDA, the initial program was supplemented by new data acquisitions covering 2012 and 2013, some of them issued from the traditional sampling campaigns of the monitoring networks currently in place, others being more targeted in order to clarify certain insufficiently detailed aspects, including a more precise approach to clarify the ecology of the Nitzschia inconspicua (NINC) species in the West Indies. These acquisitions of additional data provided an opportunity to supplement the taxonomic lists and to consolidate the ecological information acquired on the taxa sufficiently found in Guadeloupe and Martinique during the 5 years covered by field campaigns. The methodological guide helping to support the good IDA practice consists of 2 complementary documents. The Volume 1: "Methodological and iconological guide" contains: - the main elements relating to the biology and ecology of diatoms, useful for understanding the operating principles of the diatomic bio-indication in general, and of this new index in particular, - a summary of the different steps of development of the IDA, - the methodology developed to calculate this index, - the taxonomic data acquired during this Research-Development program, which may prove useful for the determination of the diatom species sampled in the French West Indies. Elements related to the classification of species found during our study include a glossary, an original diatom determination key, the iconological positioning of the taxa found in the study, and a practical system of small summary tables indicating the reference of photographic plates where one can find the taxon in this first and in the 2nd volume. - finally, Volume 1 includes 94 iconological and iconographic plates allowing to present the photographs acquired on most of the taxa encountered during the study. The present Volume 2, for its part, is a collection of taxa-cards containing the iconographic, chorological and auto-ecological information about the taxa sufficiently encountered during the study and involved in the calculation of the new diatomic index of the Antilles (IDA). The 2 volumes of this methodological guide therefore synthesize all the information needed for the implementation of the new IDA by water managers and public contractors.
