Dynamique géomorphologique des torrents : intérêt de l'emploi des appareils photographiques automatiques

Abstract : Our knowledge on floods magnitude and frequency in steep slope streams is insufficient for an optimal natural hazards management. Images taken by automatic cameras enhance our knowledge on torrential processes and dynamics. The cameras' automatization is required in mountain streams due to the processes' flashiness; this in a hostile environment. This paper reviews our experience of the equipment of nine alpine torrents with various cameras. The adaptations related to the torrential context are described, as well as some recommendations from our tests and trials. Some new elements of knowledge brought from the images are pointed out. In conclusion, such observation systems will, in our opinion, grow in number in the future for operational and scientific purposes.
