PRAESTAS Project Proposal (6th WFP / STREPS) - Impact of global change on biodiversity and ecosystems functionning: Methodological suggestions done by Cemagref for biotypology and biodiversity aspects

Abstract : The Water Framework Directive (WFD - 2000/60/EC) sets the objective to prevent deterioration in status of all Community waters (i.e. both surface- and ground-waters, including coastal waters, throughout the EU) and to ensure the achievement and maintenance of their good status by 2015. One important purpose of the research program proposed in PRAESTAS is then to propose methodologies able to assess the deterioration of the ecological status towards well identified chemical disturbances, and to make the water ecosystem ecological state assessment and diagnosis more accurate and interpretable for private consultants, managers and policy-makers in charge of the institutional survey natworks. At the same time, global change makes influence that mays drive to an evolution of biodiversity and ecosystems functioning. This is a second important issue tackled by PRAESTAS. These 2 issues need to : settle-up knowledge, methodologies, modelling and dedicated tools allowing to make the part between : 1) chemical and biological usual natural variation into the hydrosystem (identification and knowledge about the good reference sites), 2) man-made chemical effects interpreted as disturbances through the biological biocenosis response and altering the hydrosystem ecological status. At a longer time term, methodologies developed need to assess the evolution trends linked to global change (mostly global warming) on freshwater aquatic ecosystems, on a biodiversity (i.e. species occurring at a given geographical and bioclimatical scale) and on a functional point of view (ie achievement of natural functions of the ecosystem). During the 2nd day of the Toulouse meeting, the future project partners have been asked to give their ideas and views about the means to work and to solve some issues tackled by the PRAESTAS project, notably in the fields of biodiversity and functional aspects. Through its previous participation into 5th FP PAEQANN Project, Cemagref got a good experience about neural techniques, which may find a quite natural application in the field of biodiversity changes. Some examples of potential applications at the biotype or at the species level are presented using SOMs. If some functional knowledge would already been held by some partners on aquatic vegetal species, in the matter of functional ecology and ecological functioning of rivers, neural techniques might also be an interresting tool for doing qualitative approaches coupling species, or groups of species, and ecological functions operated inside the aquatic ecosystem.
