6th FP REBECCA / WP4 Project Meeting / Activity Group 3 Diatoms - Analysis of the French diatom dataset for implementation of the WFD and Rebecca issues: Effects of the natural variation and of nutrients causing eutrophication on the diatom communities

Abstract : This meeting organized on the initiative of the CEH (leader of Task 4), was specifically focused on the benthic diatoms compartment of rivers. Its objectives were: 1) to take stock of the work carried out during the first 18 months of the Rebecca project / WP4 "rivers" / Task 4 "Nutrients causing eutrophication"; 2) to prepare the joint meeting "Rebecca- Intercalibration groups" to be held in Bratislava the first week of October 2005; 3) to exchange the national datasets necessary for the future phases of the program; 4) to revise and redefine the planning and the upcoming schedules according to the current diagnosis of the available datasets and the experience acquired by the teams. In this context, the 4 participating teams successively presented their datasets and exploratory data analyzes already carried out. France presented 2 talks, including a 1st presentation of results acquired on the French dataset within the framework of Rebecca and the implementation of the WFD at the French level (this presentation). A 2nd presentation summarized the actions carried out in revision and re-harmonization of taxonomy for the general account of the project, as well as specific actions carried out on a French dataset of 836 diatom samples * 941 species (Michel COSTE).The present talk first took stock of the working steps done to identify the structuring power of species and to reduce the number of species of assemblages to be taken into account. Then was presented the progress of the WFD implementation under French conditions (indices used, key values by HER, EQR calculations). An update on the work, still in progress, was also drawn up on the methodologies and results of the national selection of reference sites, which notably implemented a supervised neural network (the Multi-Layer Percepron or MLP) to predict community biotypes from abiotic environmental data. The following planned point, concerning the taxonomic harmonization work carried out by Michel Coste, was subject of a separate presentation taking place after this one. The presentation then touched on first results of comparisons between nutrient contents of water and of diatom indices values , then concluded on a methodological discussion and reprogramming of collective work for the coming period, with a view to advances to be made before the next Bratislava meeting.
