Concevoir des systèmes culture élevage à l’échelle des territoires : une méthode adaptative et participative

Abstract : To better deal with the environmental issues that occur at the landscape level and promote the sustainable management of natural resources, many agronomists suggest to design technical systems at the territory level, focusing on complementarity between production systems and spatial organization of land use and practices. This article proposes a review of methodological issues related to the design of systems integrating crop and livestock systems at the territory level, as an alternative to farm and regional specialization. A participatory design method is proposed on the basis of the existing literature on territory design, in which (i) the design apparatus is built around the issues of the territory, the objectives of the partner actors; (ii) the designed object evolves and becomes more precise during the interactions with the actors, without any initial prejudice. This method is implemented in two case studies of crop - livestock integration scenario design in South-West France, different in scale and objectives. The transversal analysis of these case studies shows the generic nature of the approach and the necessary adaptations. Finally, we discuss the implications of the methodological choices on the nature and performances of the designed systems, and the consequent changes in the role of the agronomist in the design process.
