Potentialités, questionnements et besoins de recherche de l’Agriculture Biologique face aux enjeux sociétaux

Abstract : Humanity is facing huge challenges for which agriculture will play a major role. Can Organic Farming (OF), often presented as a model implementing agroecology principles, play a leading role in this context? This paper aims at answering the question of its overall performance. It is based on a broad review of scientific literature and is considering OF in its diversity. Despite the real assets of OF, the analysis shows that substantial obstacles exist. Hence, this article concludes by proposing a research agenda based on OF global performances and knowledge about biological and ecological mechanisms, evaluating the externalities, anticipation of changing scale, accompanying transitions. OF, if not the unique model for tomorrow’s agriculture, could be its prototype and the catalyst for a sustainable agriculture across the planet.
