Le marché international, communautaire et national de la viande bovine

Abstract : This article presents an overview of the beef market developments (production, consumption and trade) in the world, the European Union and France. The European beef producers received during the period 2006-2008 some good prices, mainly because the EU is a net importer. The fall in European beef production is mainly due to the drastic decline of dairy cattle and the lack of political will to boost supply by raising the ceiling for premiums rights in suckler cows. It justifies the growing imports from the Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) on commercial terms framed by the rules of the multilateral World Trade Organization (WTO). In France, the decrease in production is more moderate than in other Member States because of a traditional orientation for the suckler cows. Nevertheless, this country will probably become net importer around 2015.
