Comparaison d'outils de caractérisation de la flore pour diagnostiquer l'effet des modes de gestion sur les dynamiques de végétation des prairies permanentes

Abstract : How can the evolution of multi-specific pastures, as affected by the farming practices, be described, understood and predicted ? A number of experimental lay-outs on permanent pastures at medium altitudes provided some useful data for answering these questions. On five experimental lay-outs, the same tools were compared that are used to characterize the evolution of the fertility and of the vegetation (nutrition and grazing value indices, abundance of the botanical families, number of species, and tools borrowed from the functional approach. The variation of the grazing value index and of the number of species were explained by the fertility gradients, combined or not with gradients of perturbation, but only in a descriptive way. The mean values of certain specific characteristics and the abundance of the various functional types of grasses were good indicators of the environmental and management conditions. Moreover they reacted quite rapidly to the changeing management methods and helped to understand the workings of the plant community; they could also be useful for discussing the forage system.
