Costa Rican farmers’ organizations elaborate their vision of family agriculture: A research-action approach characterized by a break phase
Farmers’ organizations representatives together with extension workers and researchers decide to elaborate a proposal designed to strengthen family agriculture in Costa Rica. To that end they develop a research-action methodology derived from a co-construction of the set-up. Analyzing the whole process, this article aims at characterizing the results in terms of achievements, mechanisms implemented, modifications of stakeholders’ representations, and production of knowledge. It shows that it is important in this type of approach to take break phases into account as they are useful for the maturity of the process even though they may be a source of uncertainty. The success of the research action approach largely depends on the capacity to identify and mobilize the legitimate representatives.
