Le pâturage vu par l'animal : mécanismes comportementaux et applications en élevage

Abstract : The social and economical implications of the production of herbivorous livestock in France involve a greater diversity of the roles of pastures and an ever increasing number of sward types (from pluri-specific pastures to complex grasslands). The animals face a greater number of feeding options than when they are reared on uniform grass swards. It may therefore be useful to take into account the factors influencing the feeding motivation of the animals when the various intermediate situations are to be managed. The main mechanisms that govern the grazing behaviour of animals are described here ; especially how processes linked to lime, to space, and to social membership modulate their feeding options and their spatial distribution over the pastures. As an example, a diversified offer may stimulate intake, at least with animals whose requirements are moderate. There are differences in preferences, which are linked to the species, the breed, and the animal's physiological stage; a grazing animal, at first reluctant to browse certain plant species, may change ifs habits under the early guidance of ifs mother. More generally, the social partners do influence the feeding behaviour of individual animals through the social organization existing within the herd. Lastly, there is also an effect of the spatial distribution of the preferred plant species on the feeding options of the animals and on their own distribution over the pastures. Various approaches are proposed to stimulate the intake of farm animals, to direct their choices, and to utilize the pastures in a more balanced way.
