La dynamique récente des échanges français de produits laitiers

Abstract : The further development of milk production in France is essentially conditioned to the capacity of processing companies to export more dairy products to international markets. France is the second dairy exporter of EU Member states, behind Germany. Despite an increase in imports, particularly cheese and butter, France regularly improves its trade balance which increased from 1.9 billion euros in 2000 to 3.7 billion euros in 2014. This performance, which is encouraged by an upward trend in international prices (subject nevertheless to high volatility), is mainly due to the dynamics of exports in third markets (including China, Algeria and the USA). Even though intra- Community trade has developed, the trade balance of France with the EU-28 has remained relatively stable over the previous decade. This is the result of a significant improvement of the French position in the UK and Spanish markets, and a deterioration of it on the Dutch, Italian and, to a lesser extent, German markets. For Asian and African markets, increased exports primarily concern baby milk powder and skim milk powder. Cheese exports are especially oriented towards European countries, in descending order with Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Spain.
