Solid feed shape digestive bacterial community establishment in young rabbits
The objectives were to evaluate the possibility to modulate the implantation of the ceacal microbiota through diet, and to study the relationship between the composition and the function of this ecosystem. The incorporation of rapidly fermentable fibres (FRF) in the pelleted feed of rabbit pups from 15 days of age (D15), or the use of an antibiotic treatment, on the rabbit does or the pups, were used as inhibitors or stimulants of the implantation of the caecal microbiota. An antibiotic treatment of the does did not alter the composition of the caecal microbiota in nursing pups (D15). Conversely, at D29 the microbial composition was different (P<0.05) for the pups supplemented with FRF compared to the control group. Among the 7295 caecal bacterial “species”, the relative abundance of 17 species was closely linked to the variations in fermentative parameters (propionate, butyrate, total volatile fatty acids), and the relative weight of the caecum and spleen. However, only 3 “species” of them were affiliated to known genera (Bacteroides, Intestinimonas, Blautia). In conclusion, our study 1) demonstrates that the implantation of the gastrointestinal microbiota could be controlled by the solid feed before weaning, 2) highlights the existence of species closely related to fermentation products, and therefore “engineers” of the ecosystem functioning.
