Free range systems would give the opportunity to broilers to ingest environmental matrices as soil and plants. The intake of such matrices especially soil can expose the animals to persistent organic pollutants possibly deposited in the environment. Therefore, a quantification of their intake is necessary for a risk assessment in the rearing system. This study as part of the research project AlterAviBio, which is supported by the program PSDR West France, aims to quantify the intake of soil and plants of broilers raised outdoors on two kinds of areas: grass covered or under trees. An experimental device of two grass covered plots and two tree-planted plots of 2500 m 2 each were carried out with five groups of 750 birds per plot during three years. The broilers were allowed an access to the outdoor areas from the age of 29 days up to slaughtering at day 84. The intake of environmental matrices was quantified using the analyses of markers in feces which were collected during the night in the building at two time points: 51 days (growth) and 64 days (finishing). The soil intake was estimated using acid insoluble ash as marker and odd numbered n-alkanes as marker of ingested plants. At the moment of submitting, the results of three first groups enrolled in spring, autumn and winter have been available. The daily plant intake varied between 0.2 and 15 g dry matter per day. The highest intakes were recorded on grass covered plots and when plant cover was in good condition. The soil intake was generally under 2% of the dry matter intake. Nevertheless, soil intake has reached 4 g for birds on tree-planted plots during winter when plant cover was sparse. The soil intake of broilers rose on outdoor areas was slightly higher on tree-planted plots than on grass covered areas, but remained in any cases quite low. Our results are one of the first evaluations of ingested materials by broilers raised on outdoor areas. It appears that the type of outdoor area, the quality of the plant covers, but also the seasons are the main variation sources.
