La sélection génomique des ovins laitiers en France : stratégies, premiers résultats des évaluations génomiques et perspectives

Abstract : Each year, the breeding programs in French dairy sheep breeds progeny test around 700 rams, with variations between breeds. Since the late 1990’s, blood of AI rams was systematically stored by Labogena. Therefore, when the Illumina «OvineSNP50®» beadchip became available in 2009, genomic selection became possible in French dairy sheep. Stakeholders of the dairy sheep genetic industry, gathered together in the National Dairy Sheep Committee, in partnership with INRA and the Institut de l’Elevage, have organized themselves in the framework of the so-called UMT GENEpr. In the Lacaune breed, the purpose of the SheepSNPQTL and Roquefort’in project is to set up a reference population of 3,000 rams and to test genomic selection among 2 batches of rams. The aim of the Genomia project is to test multibreed genomic selection in the Pyrenean breeds, with a smaller reference population, except for the Manech Tête Rousse breed (MTR), , in association with the Spanish Latxa breed, based on 3,100 genotyped AI rams, including nearly 2,000 from the French populations. A point on both programs is presented and situated within the global strategy of genomic selection in French dairy sheep. Genomic evaluations were performed with the GBLUP methodology, for all the available phenotypes. The accuracy of genomic evaluation is presented in the Lacaune and MTR breeds, thanks to a cross-validation. In all cases, the genomic evaluation was more efficient than the polygenic evaluation, the range of gain varying from 10 to 41% according to the breed and trait. Alongside with these results, the managers of the breeding programs are working on the conception of a genomic breeding program, from the technical evolution required to the shift in contractual organizations between stakeholders.
