The O.R.P.E.S.A. project: a professional training scheme for organic rice growing combined to a research-action follow-up
The aim of the O.R.P.E.S.A. (Organic Rice Production in Environmentally Sensitive Areas) project is to develop organic rice production in European rice basins. To achieve this, training material was developed and then evaluated. Two training methods were envisaged according to the public targeted: one being “participative” the other “expositive”. In addition to its training vocation, O.R.P.E.S.A. has been the basis of the development of a quality research-action programme involving rice growers, industrial stakeholders, extension organisations and research institutions. In the not too distant future, the approach adopted by the O.R.P.E.S.A. programme should lead to the expansion of the surface area cultivated organically in Europe and to yield increase.
