Influence of silvicultural treatment on the stem shape of larch

Abstract : The taper model of BIGING has been used to describe the decrease in stem diameter with increasing height along the stem of 1134 larches (Larix sp.). These trees are issued from stands located in several European regions and reflecting various conditions of growth. The variables of the model have been related to different dendrometrical data of the trees and stands. The main known factors influencing the shape of the stem are : total height, age and, diameter at breast height (1.3 m). An example illustrates the influence of silvicultural prescriptions on the shape of the trees.
