Acceptance of different larch timber resources for high-quality flooring panels - An industrial case study

Abstract : Decausc of its appearing heartwood colour and its higher wood density, larch wood has been a traditionally appreciated species for wooàen floorings. The requirements of this high quality product are maillly drivell by the vistHtl appeaumce with heartwood colom' and knottincss being the mo~t important criteria. Within the EU Fair projcet CT98- 3354 "Towards a European Larch Wood Chain" a supplementary task was to evaluatc with an industrial partner the practicat usability of larch timber eoming from lowlands as weil as high-elevation alpine sites. 827 sawn boards l'lere sorted and machined according to the regutar industrial processes at STIA Holzindustrie GmbH, a flooring panel manufacturer located in Admont, Austria. The sawn timber l'lent through two step~ of visual grading and the rate of acceptallcc Vas determined. The criteria to pass the quality standards for flooring was not ring width in the first place, but the number and size of the blotS. If knottiness of timber comin!!, from rapidgrown and naturally growlI trees is witbin a acceptable range, fast-grown lareh plantations would deliver timber that meetg tho quality standards for wooden flooring.
