Overyielding in microbial ecosystems : what can we learn from modeling?

Résumé

Overyielding or the capacity of a complex ecosystem to produce more than would do the best of its members taken individually, has been studied in ecology for many years. Within the context of environmental microbialogy, this question is of high importance especially in the case of anaerobic digestion processes since such technology allows to produce energy from waste. The microbial studies have pointed out the high diversity of the ecosystems responsible for such a process. However, the role of the interactions between the different species present in the ecosystem is still unknown. Using a simple model of a batch process, we first show that any association of more than one species, all together, cannot do better, in terms of performances, than the best single one if only the competition is considered as interactions between species. However, if a process of mortality is added to the model, we show that overyielding may appear. this theoretical result if of high importance since it points out the important role of diversity with respect to performa, nces of biological processes. Finally, we present a number of results related to overyielding in continuous processes.
