Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases by Soy Protein and Isoflavones

Résumé

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term used to describe a wide range of unhealthy conditions, from arteriosclerosis to disorders of the peripheral vascular system. Currently, CVDs are considered to be responsible for approximately 30% of deaths worldwide. It is also estimated that more than 17.5 million people die annually from CVDs, and the number of deaths are projected to increase to 20 million by 2015 [1]. In the last decades several studies tried to identify the prevalence of recognized biological and behavioral risk factors associated with development of CVDs in order to improve its prevention. The most important factors that have been identified to show a significant increase in the risk of developing a CVD were divided into non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors. The major non-modifiable risk factors include heredity, gender, and age. Since these are non-modifiable risk factors, prevention has focused mainly on modifiable risk factors that include elevated blood pressure, dyslipidemia (triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels), smoking, obesity, physical inactivity and diabetes mellitus. At the present time, there is increasing evidence that reducing or controlling these factors can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality caused by CVDs. In fact, identification and control of these conditions are the basis of several risk assessment and reduction strategies [2-4].
