Strengthening ties between livestock farming and landscapes to improve societal well-being: points to consider and first steps to take

Yves Michelin 1, *
Abstract : We frequently hear that livestock farming negatively affects the environment, public health, and animal welfare. To improve the way livestock farming is viewed and to help the industry respond to the serious crisis it is facing, we must better understand the relationship between livestock farming, production regions, and landscapes. Using some contrasting examples and a partial review of the literature, this study describes an initial methodological approach for systematically analysing the interactions among livestock farming, landscapes, and quality of life that takes into account social, political, and economic factors at varying scales (i.e., farm, landscape, and region). This study also identifies various hurdles and tools. It suggests that landscapes can help re-establish ties between society and livestock farming, with a view to comprehensively enhancing the latter's sustainability.
