Conséquences d’un stress thermique survenant pendant la période pré-ovulatoire chez la truite arc-en-ciel (Oncorhynchus mykiss) sur les réponses émotionnelles et cognitives de la progéniture

Abstract : In the current context of climate change, farmed fish are often exposed to suboptimal temperatures, which can affect the quality of the eggs. This exhibition takes place during the breeding season. Although the direct consequences of maternal thermal stress on survival and embryo malformations are well known, the longer-term impacts on the behavioral plasticity of the offspring are completely unexplored. In order to answer questions, rainbow trout females were exposed to normal temperature (12 ° C, batch 12C) or high (17 ° C, batch 17C) at the end of oogenesis. Between 75 and 138 dpf, the offspring of these females were subjected to tests for the evaluation of adaptive behaviors. We evaluated the propensity to express fear-related behaviors in a variety of contexts: a social isolation test in a new environment (eg, novel-tank test), a sudden test (release of a marble) and a sudden exploration test. We also evaluated the learning abilities of fish in a spatial learning task in a T-Maze. The results showed that heat stress during oogenesis resulted in increased embryonic mortality. The offspring of females raised at 17 ° C show a form of emotional blunting in behavioral tests. They seem less reactive to isolation, and show less apprehension in the face of a new object and a new environment. Moreover, it shows a slower acquisition capacity of a spatial learning task. These results reveal the harmful and non-adaptive behavioral consequences for young trout following a thermal stress experienced by their mother before spawning. This study raises the importance of better understanding and preventing the long-term effects of global warming on behavioral plasticity and consequently on the welfare of farmed fish.
