Etude technico-économique sur l'opportunité de récupération des métaux contenus dans les eaux usées domestiques

Abstract : Recovering metals from wastewater is a major challenge for the transformation of the wastewater treatment plant into water resource recovery plant. This report draws up a state of the art based on bibliographical knowledge, including the problems and opportunities for the recovery of about fifty metals. It identifies the metals of interest by matrix, based on criteria of strategy, criticality, concentrations and financial potential. The cross-referencing of these criteria shows recovery opportunities in sludge for copper, chromium, iron and aluminium. In sludge ash, it is appropriate to recover ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum. Finally, in treated water from wastewater treatment plants, recovery opportunities exist for antimony, lithium, zinc, magnesium or barium. This report also lists the recovery technologies available and under development. It highlights the limits of available knowledge, as well as the major obstacles to be overcome in optimising the extraction stage, particularly in terms of selectivity. This is essential for the control of the products obtained. Finally, this work identifies the knowledge that should be advanced to accompany the development of metal recovery processes. For example, the speciation of metals and the influencing factors need to be studied in depth, as well as the reaction processes and their reversibility conditions in the remediation matrices, more particularly the links between metals and solid phases (organic matter, sorbents, precipitates, resins, etc.).
