Adapting the measurement methods to the different purposes

Paul Robin

Résumé

Air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions have become year after year a major environmental concern for livestock farmers. Scientists have developed different methods to study the emitting processes and to develop mitigation techniques. These methods are often costly, time consuming, and require high technical skills. The implementation of these methods is often difficult in real conditions. Today emissions measurement are needed for different kind of purposes that do not require high level of accuracy and continuous measurement. For instance, the determination of emission factors for the different kind of production systems requires measurement of emissions in a high number of farms per category of production systems to capture the variability of emissions inside a category. Three different levels of measurement methods can be defined: reference methods, simplified methods, and control method. These 3 categories of methods correspond to different level of users skills, investments in time and in material.
