Enriching the environment with manipulable materials seems to improve the welfare of gestating sows by increasing exploratory behaviours and reducing stereotypies. The objective of this project was to quantify effects of enrichments on different gestating sows behaviours (physical activity, exploration, social interactions) to eventually better adjust the amount of feed distributed daily and individually. The experiment was conducted during a basal week (without the addition of extra materials) followed by a test week (presence of a brush, ropes and burlap bags). The behaviour of 28 multiparous pregnant sows, housed in two groups of 14, was monitored by video analysis over two 5 h periods (PM: from 13:30-18:30; Night: 23:00-04:00) on Monday and Wednesday. Sows spent 1.0% (PM) and 2.1% (Night) of their time exploring the objects, with a high variability among individuals (0-15.2 min). The presence of enrichment did not influence the physical activity and therefore did not impact the energy requirements. Sows had fewer non-feeding visits (mean ± standard deviation) to the feeder during the test week than during the basal week (4.6 ± 2.8 vs 5.3 ± 3.4, respectively; P < 0.01) and fewer negative social interactions (4.6 ± 5.9 vs 6.5 ± 6.0, respectively). In conclusion, enrichment with objects improved sow welfare but had little influence on sow activity and thus on energy requirements, in part due to the presence of straw during both weeks that may have satisfied the expression of exploratory needs and promote sow activity.
