Biosecurity challenges to reduce the needs of antimicrobials in pig and broiler farming systems

Abstract

Biosecurity is pivotal to keep under control the exposure of farm animals to pathogens. Therefore, it is considered as a strong lever to reduce the needs of antibiotic use in farm animals. In the HealthyLivestock project, we develop and evaluate innovative approaches to support improvements in biosecurity in pig and broiler farms. Based on existing knowledge, we develop a risk assessment tool to evaluate biosecurity performance in a farm. We further identify biomarkers that can be used to monitor the results of biosecurity and that enable to detect early a failure in biosecurity procedures. This approach is original because it is result-oriented, whereas existing tools to assess biosecurity are resource-based. The innovative tools and biomarkers will be used to support the definition and implementation of health control plans which are tailor-made to the specific risks identified in given farms. The consequences of implementing the tools and plans on animal health, antibiotic use, and performance will be assessed in a variety of farming systems and potential exposure in 7 countries
