Prevalence of food allergy in France up to 5.5 years: results from the ELFE cohort

Résumé

Introduction: In France, updated data on food allergies are lacking, few studies have estimated food allergy (FA) prevalence in children during the last 20 years. The aims of our study are to evaluate the prevalence of FA in children in France and to describe the most common allergens involved. Material and methods: The ELFE study is a nationwide birth cohort including 18 329 children born in 2011 in France. Food exclusion based on medical advice for FA were reported by the parents at 2 months, 2, 3.5 and 5.5 years. Data regarding FA were available for 15 798 children. Data were weighted to account for selection and attrition bias. Results: The prevalence of FA up to 5.5 years is 6.09 % [CI 95% (5.63 – 6.55)]. Milk is the most common allergen (3.4%), followed by egg (0.87%), peanut (0.87%), exotic fruits such as kiwi or pineapple (0.56%), tree nuts (0.50%), gluten (0.35%) and fish (0.27%). Milk is the allergen the most frequently involved in single FA. In all, 20.5 % reported multiple FA. The most frequently associated allergens were peanut, milk and egg. We observed that 16.8 % of children with a milk allergy had at least one more FA and that 59.1% of children with peanut allergy had multiple FA (33.9%, 32.2% and 5.1% present concomitant FA to egg, tree nuts or legumes, respectively). Finally, 11.3% of children with fish allergy were also allergic to sea food. Conclusion: In France, the prevalence of FA up to 5.5 years is about 6 %. One allergic child in 5 had multiple FA. Whereas CM allergy is most of the time isolated, more than half of children with peanut allergy have at least one other FA. This study provides important French epidemiologic updated data essential for the management and the prevention of FA.
