Barriers and levers for the development of organic pig farming in France
Résumé
Despite an increasing market demand for pork organic products, the development of organic pig production in Europe remains slow compared to other animal and plant sectors. In France, pig production under organic farming specifications has developed recently (+83% of sows and +103% of slaughtered volume between 2015 and 2019) but represents only 1.7% of the total sow herd. The consortium Origami (ORganic for pIG FarMIng) funded by INRAe for 18 months (2021-22) aims at identifying ‘multi-scale’ brakes and levers linked to the development of organic pig farming to ultimately propose projects and actions to favour process optimization at each level. This network brings together research institute, technical institute and organic institute and is composed of about fifty attendees, with a diversity of area of expertise (biology, animal science, agronomy, food processing, economic and human sciences), levels of approach (from the animal to the sectors and territories) and geographical situations (metropolitan France and overseas). Interviews of stakeholders of the pork sector (organic, conventional or mixed; historical or new) were performed to update the challenges faced by the organic pig production. Brakes and levers identified are linked to technical (buildings, feed, health), economic (carcass value, price) and social (dialogue between stakeholders, communication with consumers) dimensions. Links between brakes and levers have been analysed regarding interactions between actors of the pig chain (production, slaughtering, processing, consumption, etc.). Using a participatory approach consortium participants were invited to express their point of view and expectations. Research problems and questions were then formalized. The shared culture and enlarged vision developed in this network will promote dialogue with multiple partners towards the emergence of interdisciplinary research projects.
