Characterising within-field variability of vine water status with simple visual observations of shoot growth

Abstract

Existing vine water status monitoring tools are often complex and expensive. Shoot growth observations have been demonstrated to be an interesting alternative for field-level management but not yet at the within-field scale. The study reported in this paper was conducted to determine whether a simple shoot observation method could be satisfactorily used to characterize the spatial structure of shoot growth related to water stress at within-field scale. Based on a geostatistical approach, this study showed that shoot growth observations can be used to delineate within field management zones of vine water status if observations are made by a single operator and during periods when vine water stress is increasing.
