Climate or technical change in wine?

Résumé

Climatologists are emphasizing an acceleration of the global temperature increase since the mid-80s and publishing alarming forecasts regarding vine and wine production, especially in vineyards with Protected Designations of Origin (PDO). Yet inquiries since the late ‘90s show a relative indifference among farmers and vine-growers regarding climate change, even though one would expect them to be at the front stage in this respect. This study seeks to gain some insight into this apparent climate scepticism by inquiring amongst vine-growers, wine-makers, vintners and some of their institutional partners, in two French PDO vineyards, to get their point of view on climate change. Results are more or less in line with previous studies. However, while the interviewees agree with the climatologists in listing some important changes in grapes and wines, they attribute them not to climate change but instead to the technical changes and the yield reductions that have spread in French vineyards since the mid80s. The difference between the researchers’ and the winegrowers’ change assessments can be related first to the special emphasis they put on practices, and their ability to deal with the annual climate variations. Yet it can also be related to the framing of the problem. While climatologists endeavour to recognize, amongst the multiple changes, those that can be imputed to a unique cause, climate change, the wine industry stakeholders expand their analyses to encompass the multiple causes they have to deal with.
