Dynamics of radionuclides

Abstract

The chemistry of radioactive isotopes in soil does not differ from that of their stable isotopes. There are however three important differences: radioisotopes are often present in trace amounts; isotopes may change chemical and physical form when they decay; and adverse effects on biological organisms may occur without physical contact or absorption due to ionizing radiation. Case studies are given for the most environmentally relevant isotopes.
