Equipment and Quality control arrangments for the control of contamination in the pathology laboratory and for environmental protection

Abstract

The pathology laboratory of the SNES has developed special equipment and procedures to fight against intra- and inter-laboratory contamination and also to treat the waste material in such a way as to avoid any risk to the environment. Two examples described in this paper illustrate these points: the first deals with purity control of several strains of Plasmopara halstedii an agent for mildew; the other with the treatment of waste material contaminated from the disease resistance tests of potatoes to cyst nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida. The fight against intra- and inter-laboratory contamination depends essentially on the design of the buildings so that the different activities are compatible, and also on the training of the staff. Access to the laboratories are controlled in both time and space. In order to observe the regulations for the protection of the environment concerning parasites under quarantine, the setting up of an extraction system from soil for the cysts of the nematode Globodera was preceded by the perfection of equipment to treat residue water and sludge. Having eliminated chemical and physical (filtration) control due to cost, inefficiency or danger to the environment, it was decided to use a system using pasteurisation techniques developed in the food processing industry. This system destroys the cysts and nematodes in a process that can treat up 20-25 m3 per day. This equipment forms a reliable treatment system, following a quality control procedure, and respects the constraints imposed for handling organisms which are dangerous to the agricultural environment.
