Analyzing energy consumption of robots in agroecological practices: an empirical study

Abstract

In the context of ecological transition, feeding people around the world in an environmentally and socially respectful way will be a principal issue and cannot be achieved with current agricultural practices. Agroecology is a fundamental lever to construct the society of tomorrow. Researching and exploring different methods to improve agriculture is thus essential. Implementing robotics in the process is one of the solutions. Automating simple and repetitive tasks can provide better control over cultivation and simplify the process. This is the research topic of the TSCF unit within which I did my internship at the INRAE institute. However, robotics is energy-consuming, and to respond to future challenges of energy sobriety, especially in a context of agroecology, it has to be energy efficient. Currently, very little research exists on saving energy in agroecological robotics. The main purpose of this two-month internship is to explore this subject and establish the best ways of optimizing energy consumption and practices for energy saving in the TSCF robots.
