Investigating the social interactions between pigs seems to be a promising approach to characterise their affective state. Affiliative interactions in particular have been suggested to promote positive social dynamics and group stability. However, some social interactions such as nosing behaviours can have different functions, making it ambivalent to determine the affective state behind it. They could serve a social function (affiliation, recognition) or they could be a redirection of unfulfilled exploratory needs. A total of 114 piglets, divided in three replicates, were used to investigate the influence of housing conditions on the expression of exploratory and social behaviours in pigs. The piglets were assigned to two contrasted housing conditions (two pens per con dition and per replicate): minimal (MIN) versus enriched (ENR), intended to elicit different welfare experiences and corresponding affective states. ENR pigs were born in free-farrowing system with early sociabilisation and had access to a variety of enrichments from birth onwards: extra space, rooting materials, play objects in reg ular rotation, feeding toys, music and daily petting. MIN pigs were born in conventional farrowing systems equipped with a single rope and a plastic chewing ball. We studied indirect measurements of agonistic interactions through skin lesions the day before weaning (D-1) and 24 hours post-weaning (D1). The social behaviours of the pigs were individually recorded using top-view video cameras during two weekend days (D9 after wean ing, and D37). We applied continuous focal animal sampling on four samples of 20 minutes per day corresponding to four periods of time (8:30-11:00, 11:00-13:30, 13:30-16:00, and 16:00-18:30). Within each period, we selected the first 20-min sequence where at least half of the pigs were active in order to capture exploratory be haviours and social interactions. For exploration-related behaviour, we distinguished exploration towards pen features from interactions with enrichment materials. As potentially affiliative behaviours, we extracted nosing behaviours (nose, head, body, ano-genital, belly-nosing) and play occurrences (play-fight, locomotor play). Behavioural data is currently being analysed and will aim at evaluating the following assumptions: Piglets in the enriched group had improved welfare and therefore i) exhibited more exploratory behaviours, especially towards enrichment materials ii) had lower skin lesion scores iii) had a higher expression of certain types of nosing interactions (nose, head, and body). This study will provide new insights into the affective state behind social behaviours and help us determine whether they should be interpreted as positive affiliative behaviours or potential signs of redirected exploratory needs.
