              <p>Feed efficiency is a key factor in the economic and environmental performance of guinea fowl. However, the guinea fowl feed conversion ratio (FCR) is higher than for broilers (2.74 vs 1.64 according to 2018 ITAVI statistics). Improving it through  election would therefore be interesting, but it implies having an individual measurement of feed consumption, most often obtained in individual cages, an environment not very compatible with the behavior of this species. We tested whether, as in chickens, serum colorimetry could be an indirect selection criterion for guinea fowl feed efficiency. To this end, we calculated the genetic parameters of feed conversion and serum absorbance between 320 and 600 nm onrespectively 1062 individuals from 8 generations and 524 animals from the last 3 generations. The heritability of the FCR is moderate (0.20). The heritability of absorbance fluctuates greatly with wavelength, but is greater than 0.45 from 400 nm, with a maximum of 0.68 at 592 nm. Because of a moderate genetic correlation going to 0.31 between these two traits, selection for absorbance would be less effective in improving guinea fowl FCR than direct selection for FCR.</p>

              <p>L'efficacité alimentaire est un élément essentiel des performances économiques et environnementales des pintades. L'indice de consommation (IC) des pintades est cependant plus élevé que chez le poulet de chair (2,74 vs 1,64 selon les chiffres de l'ITAVI de 2018). L'améliorer par la sélection serait donc une piste intéressante, mais cela implique de disposer d'une mesure individuelle de la consommation alimentaire, obtenue le plus souvent en cage individuelle, environnement peu compatible avec le comportement de cette espèce. Nous avons testé si, comme chez le poulet, la colorimétrie du sérum pourrait être un critère de sélection indirect de l'efficacité alimentaire des pintades. Pour ce faire, nous avons calculé les paramètres génétiques de l'indice de consommation et de l'absorbance du sérum entre 320 et 600 nm sur respectivement 1062 issus de 8 générations et 524 animaux des 3 dernières générations. L'héritabilité de l'IC est modérée (0,20). Celle de l'absorbance fluctue beaucoup avec la longueur d'ondes, mais est supérieure à 0,45 à partir de 400 nm, avec un maximum à 0,68 à 592 nm. Malgré une corrélation génétique modérée entre les 2 caractères allant jusqu'à 0,31, la sélection de l'absorbance serait moins efficace pour améliorer l'IC des pintades qu'une sélection directe de l'IC.</p>
