Mesures des caractéristiques géotechniques des sols grossiers - application aux sols de torrent

Abstract : Defences against natural risks in mountainous areas often include structures such as embankments, to provide protection from torrential flooding (bank protection, sediment deposition areas), avalanches or falling rocks. These structures are often built in a difficult geotechnical context. In addition, the soils (fallen earth, moraine, deposited torrential sediment) likely to be used fall into the wide grain size distribution category, which are relatively unknown in geotechnical terms. This paper presents an experimental study of physical and mechanical characteristics of soils taken from torrent beds in French Alps and Pyrenées Mountains. Some samples of those coarse-grained soils have been specially studied using large direct shear boxes.
