Evaluation of the methane production of livestock wastes: ultimate productivity and organic matter characterisation

Abstract : A wide range of ultimate methane yield values are available for each animal specie in the literature. Organic matter compositions, biomass activity and potential inhibitors influence methane productions. Moreover, analytical practices could also have an effect on methane production determination. In this context, a specific methodology was used to determine the maximum methane production of eleven slurries and the influence of the measurements conditions. Firstly, the results showed clearly the partial volatilisation of TVFA during drying inducing an error up to 25% of the VS content. Secondly, the effects of the organic load and the mixing were evaluated and results indicated an important effect of these parameters on the methane production kinetics, probably due to the inhibition. The organic load could also influence slightly the maximum methane production. No influence of the origin of the inoculum was found. In the same way, no direct correlations between B0 and the organic fractions were observed. Finally, maximum methane production from 230 to 373 L CH4.kgVSload-1 were determined for swine slurries, from 215 to 273 L CH4.kgVSload-1 for cattle slurries and equal to 473 and 291 L CH4.kgVSload-1 respectively for calves and duck slurries.
