Determination of the thermodynamics properties of THF+CO2 hydrates in relation with their use in refrigeration application

Abstract : Clathrate hydrates slurries are promising systems in the field of cold storage and cold distribution. The heat of formation of many clathrate hydrates is higher than that observed for other phase change materials used in this field. Furthermore the melting temperatures of gas hydrates may be consistent with the temperatures required by applications such as refrigeration and air conditioning. In this work, the Lw-H-V equilibrium conditions as well as the heat of dissociation and the heat capacity of a clathrate hydrate formed from tetrahydrofuran (THF)/CO2/water mixtures were studied, using a DSC method. The influence of THF concentration and CO2 partial pressure has been investigated. For equilibrium condition determination, THF concentration was varied from 1.0 to 16.0 wt% and the CO2 partial pressure range was 2 bar to 20 bar. For enthalpy, THF concentration was fixed at 19 wt% and CO2 partial pressure investigated from 5 bar to 20 bar. Experimental equilibrium temperatures and enthalpy values were in good agreement with the results of a model combining the van der Waals and Platteeuw approach with the R-K-S equation of state associated to a MHV2 mixing rule. Both equilibrium conditions and dissociation enthalpy show that THF+CO2 hydrate slurries are promising mixtures for refrigeration application.
